Practice Printing Letters of the Alphabet

Before using a pencil to print letters, children will benefit from opportunities to develop fine motor skills. Playing with and manipulating blocks, puzzle pieces and Lego pieces can all help.

Opportunities to use crayons, scissors, stencils, markers, paintbrushes, pencil crayons and glue sticks are all beneficial as well.

Please remind your child to use his/her non-lettering hand to hold the paper steady while printing. We recommend beginning with uppercase letters and with just a few letters at a time.

Ways to Use Our Printable Alphabets for Homeschool, Preschool and Kindergarten

StorytimeStandouts suggests ways to use free printable alphabets
  1. Print two copies of one alphabet, cut apart, mix up and play a memory game. For young children, use just a few letters and talk about how the letter shapes are alike and different as you play.
  2. Print one set of uppercase letters and one set of lowercase letters. Cut apart, mix up and play a matching game. For young children, only use a few letters and talk about how the letter shapes are alike and different as you play. For older children, talk about letter sounds.
  3. Print one set of letters and cut apart. Ask your child to put the letters alphabetical order (or reverse alphabetical order).
  4. Use the letters to spell high-frequency sight words and ask your child to read or have your child use the letters to spell familiar words.
  5. Use the letters to spell word families. Add different letters to the beginning or the ending of the chunk to create a variety of words. For example b, c,  f, h, m, r, s can all be used at the beginning of at (bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, rat, sat)  AND ck, d, g, ll, n, r, t can all be used with ba (back, bad, bag, ball, ban, bar, bat).

When I use these alphabet printables, I print them onto cardstock and then use my cool laminator to protect the  learning activities.
